Within the year, Opus Newton—a groundbreaking model of community for older adults who fall in between qualifying for subsidized housing and being able to afford the very high-end market offerings. Set on the JCC Campus in Newton and physically connected to 2Life Community’s Coleman House, Opus Newton will be an inclusive, welcoming community. A defining, unique element is the focus on volunteering as a community-building tool. All Opus residents agree to volunteer at least 10 hours/month. In addition, there are beautifully landscaped terraces with a cafe, cultural arts and learning spaces, fitness areas, patios, and gardens. Walking trails will link our campus to the JCC, Newton Community Farm, and Nahanton Park.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Fitness Program at 2Life engages residents in meaningful activity, including diverse exercise classes, supervised gym usage, health & wellness, and expressive therapy programs that support healthy aging. Fitness team members work with residents in group and one-on-one sessions to support their fitness goals, with a focus on progressive strength, balance, and endurance, fall prevention, and cardiovascular training.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Lead daily exercise classes following evidence-based, best practice programs. Classes include balance and strength training, toning and conditioning, weight training, and aerobics. 
  • Create workout plans for Nahanton campus residents in the Fitness Center, and monitor and document progress on the HUR strength training equipment, treadmills, and other gym equipment usage, and monitor resident safety in the gym.
  • Pre-set individualized programs on (RFID wristband/card to be scanned on the HUR equipment. The system automatically adjusts the seat, lever-arm position, resistance, and repetitions based on the individual’s personalized program.
  • Coordinate with health services staff for individual resident wellness programs
  • Participate in move-in assessments, change-of-condition meetings, and interdisciplinary planning to support resident health and fitness goals.
  • Educate, evaluate and assist residents on proper exercise technique and equipment usage to make sure they are performed correctly and provide encouragement, motivation, and improvement feedback.
  • Work one-on-one with frail residents and those recuperating from surgery and/or a fall.
  • Lead fitness classes designed for residents with cognitive and/or physical impairments.
  • Conduct assessments of residents’ balance, gait, and strength to support safe participation in supervised gym and to determine eligibility for unsupervised gym access, with re-evaluations conducted every six months, both supervised and unsupervised
  • Attend staff meetings, webinars, and training sessions.
  • Maintain and expand professional expertise in fitness and wellness, and lead educational workshops for residents.
  • Collect and record data about exercise class and other related usage by Nahanton Campus residents in 2Life’s Salesforce database.
  • Follow up on generated reports related to falls, new move-ins, resident interest, and fall risk assessments to ensure proactive care planning.
  • Maintain and grow professional competency on fitness and other wellness topics.
  • Develop and organize fitness class schedules, including weekly and monthly calendars that feature both internal programs and programs provided by external vendors.
  • Assist with invoicing for vendors and contracted fitness instructors.
  • Train and provide supervision to fitness interns, supporting their development and ensuring alignment with organizational standards and practices
  • Screen, coordinate, and monitor fitness volunteers for specific programs, such as Tai Chi and yoga.
  • Work closely with the Director of Fitness and 2Life headquarters Fitness Team colleagues to ensure programming meets 2Life standards of quality.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Volunteerism and Resident Services to solicit and follow up on resident feedback concerning fitness programs.
  • Optimize the flow of communication internally/externally and keep fitness/site staff updated of all changes, policies, and events. 
  • Collaborate with the Jewish Community Center (JCC) to integrate fitness programs.
  • Partner with 2Life Resident Services and Central Programming colleagues to support existing and new programs that focus on physical and mental health and wellbeing.
  • Participate in special events and programs sponsored by outside community partners.
  • Assist with new programs, projects, and other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure quality maintenance and function of all equipment; schedule repairs/replacements in a timely manner.
  • Track and monitor fitness expenses.
  • Maintain fitness certifications, including personal training (ACE, NASM, or similar).

PREPARATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology and/or Exercise Science/Health & Fitness

  • Experience in evaluating fitness programs for older adults is preferred
  • Minimum of one year of related work experience
  • Experience leading group fitness classes
  • A collaborative, team-focused work style is required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work comfortably with older adults, including persons with dementia
  • Experience working with older adults
  • Ability to listen, be supportive, and non-judgmental
  • Ability to manage time effectively and maintain accurate data

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to demonstrate exercises and assist residents in a safe manner
  • Ability to stand, walk, and lift for periods of time during fitness sessions.
