Job Description

The Orchestra Production Manager, reporting to the Director of Stage Operations, Orchestra, supervises members of the production and stage management team, helps manage all aspects of day-to-day concert production, ensures successful performances, and maintains a positive relationship with San Diego Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) members and visiting high profile artists at Jacobs Music Center, The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, and a variety of other locations and venues in Southern California. This position requires extensive experience working with an orchestra with skills to pivot out of classical programming and into popular programming with and without the orchestra. This is a full-time, year-round position with a schedule heavy in events during the summer and fall seasons at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working as part of a team, manage and help supervise all aspects of production planning and advancing of concerts for the San Diego Symphony at the Jacobs Music Center, The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, and other venues throughout Southern California with both orchestral events and non-orchestral events.
  • Support, help supervise and direct production staff including stagehands and Production Stage Managers, when present, during rehearsals and concerts when assigned.
  • Assist Director of Stage Operations, Orchestra in reviewing guest artist riders and executing/distributing production plans, in conjunction with the Director of Production, Artistic staff, Music Director, guest conductors, and their management teams.
  • Create or facilitate the distribution of production summaries, day sheets, schedules, event information sheets, run of show plans, and stage plots for all assigned productions.
  • Assist Director of Stage Operations, Orchestra, in planning, coordinating, and maintaining the production schedule for Symphony programs.
  • Assist Director of Stage Operations, Orchestra, in maintaining production budget and compliance.
  • Use Vectorworks to create stage plots, accounting for spacing and equipment requirements of each program and at all applicable designated performance venues/spaces.
  • As needed, assist or manage/supervise non-orchestral event advances, stage management, and production changeovers.
  • Act as liaison between guest artists, technical personnel, venue, and Symphony musicians.
  • Collaborate with visiting performing groups to ensure that production needs are met within the parameters of Jacobs Music Center or The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.
  • Rent Backline, production equipment and instruments as needed for all assigned productions.
  • Be present and serve as leader at assigned productions for load-in/set-up, rehearsals, performances, and load-out, including equipment transport and tracking.
  • Proactively anticipate potential staging concerns, such as intricate stage changes, staff/crew training, temperature, lighting, or safety, and effectively problem-solve before the beginning of any given service. Communicate and coordinate with Production Stage Managers.
  • Share in stage management (call/run all types of shows) concert duty with production team, heavy in night and weekend requirements.
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with all departments within the SDSO including the Music Director, Orchestra, stage crew, senior management, artist managers, guest conductors, guest artists, and outside vendors.
  • Coordinate and communicate information related to lighting effects, seat holds and kills, and reserved parking for concerts at Jacobs Music Center or The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park to necessary departments.
  • Assist Director of Stage Operations, Orchestra in Supervising inventory and maintenance of Association owned instruments and equipment.
  • Confirm, collect, and manage venue information when performing in other venues and assist in preparing those venues for arrival of Association on event days.
  • Record and archive production information for all assigned concerts.
  • Share in department responsibility of managing all production and logistical arrangements for tours, both for personnel and cargo. Including, but not limited to, truck rentals, pack lists, scheduling and oversight of truck packs.
  • Accompany the Orchestra on tours and run outs as needed.
  • Assist in planning, implementing, and overseeing employee safety at work in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines as well as established SDSO protocols.
  • Coordinate piano rentals and tunings.
  • Assist percussion musicians including purchasing, renting, and maintaining instruments.
  • Coordinate or perform library runs.
  • Schedule and oversee crew maintenance work outside of regular rehearsals and concerts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Abilities:

  • Proven knowledge of the music and entertainment industry.
  • A minimum 6 years of relevant experience, at least 3 in orchestra and 3 in popular programming (can be simultaneous experience) and/or general theatrical experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of Vectorworks software.
  • Ability to read music is preferred.
  • Touring experience preferred.
  • Experience working with AEG, Live Nation, and other promoters.
  • Proven leadership and project management.
  • General knowledge of artists and repertoire.
  • Ability to read, understand, and maintain knowledge of Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Ability to understand budgets and track expenditures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; attention to detail.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, drafting software.
  • Ability to:

General Requirements:

  • Regular, predictable attendance required for numerous evening and weekend work shifts.
  • Available to work regular business hours in addition to evenings, weekends and some holidays as required.
  • Able to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Able to pick up and move a minimum of 25 lbs.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office working conditions: sitting at a desk and computer terminal for long periods of time, typing and computer work, light to moderate lifting.
  • Normal backstage working conditions: standing for long periods of time, light to moderate lifting, noisy atmosphere both indoors and outdoors.

Benefits

Pay Range: $80,000.00-$90,000.00/annually
